1: DAN BASEN DRAWING, ORIGINAL WORKDan Basen American; paper Drawing 'Untitled Nude' by Dan Basen (1939-1970). Provenance: Dan Basen | Private Collection, Natick, Massachusetts. Regarding his friendship with the artist, consignor states: 'In the early 1960s, I had just gotten out of the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant and Public Relations Officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain, where I worked on PR for the Cdr. Alan Shephard NASA Mercury space capsule launch, America's first sub-orbital mission into space. I went immediately from that Navy tour of duty to become the Public Relations Director of the Wadsworth Atheneum Art Museum in Hartford. CT - America's oldest art museum (1844). It was there I met Dan Basen. He was living in West Hartford, CT at the time. He was part of the area's young active art community that gathered regularly in the museum for various events. Dan was also a good friend of the Wadsworth's famous curator of paintings Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr., who went on to become the patron and partner of the famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Sam was a great supporter of Dan and his vibrant work. We all were close friends in and outside of the museum. Being in PR, I was often asked by Dan to write the press releases for him for the art shows at which he was exhibiting in the area. Being a struggling artist, he presented me with his artwork in lieu of fees. Dan often visited me and my wife in our home, and we visited his. We became very good close friends. He and his creativity were fun and very exciting to be around. Then he moved on in the late ‘60s to New York City. That horrible April 1st in 1970, the day he ended his life, shocked and deeply saddened us greatly. I can still see him wagging his wild curly head and laughing excitedly over his latest creative effort. All that energy was in his work. He had no bounds. He seemed to have such a bright future. But no one knows a person's secret demons - especially a true artist's fears.' 24"h, 19"w |

116: HISAO DOMOTO PAINTING, ORIGINAL WORKHisao Domoto Japanese; canvas Painting '... De Continuite' by Hisao Domoto (b. 1928). Gallery label to reverse; Martha Jackson Gallery, New York. 'Domoto grew up in a family of artists, including his uncle Domoto Insho. At the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts he studied Nihonga, Japanese-style painting. While he was still in school, one of his works was selected for the Nitten exhibition, an achievement that raised high hopes for his future. In 1952 he traveled with his uncle on his first trip to Europe and, fed up with the closed world of art in Japan, turned his eyes overseas. In 1955 he moved to France and began to paint in the Western-style, then threw himself body and soul into the Informel movement. His first solo exhibition at the Stadler Gallery in Paris was a brilliant success. In these works his brushstrokes slashed left and right, covering the canvas with horizontal strokes. During the early 1960s, however, he left Informel and produced the Solutions of Continuities series, using heavy impasto to create images of wheel tracks or louvered doors. In the 1970s, he employed repeated circles in works whose names are taken from astronomical bodies. Starting in the 1980s, his range expanded to include zig-zag lines in a wide range of acrylic colors, giving birth to the Continuous Response series. Since 2000, Domoto has been experimenting with monochrome works in which the pigments are splattered on the canvas.' {source: bridgestonemuseum} 64"h, 50"w; 64.5"h, 50.5"w frame |

142: MA LIUMING PAINTING, ORIGINAL WORKMa Liuming Chinese; oil on canvas Painting 'Baby No. 9' by Ma Liuming (b. 1969). Gallery label to reverse; Wolfgang Roth & Partners Fine Art, Miami, Florida. Provenance: Artist | Michael Goedhuis Gallery, London | Heritage Auctions June 9, 2010 auction, lot 72223 | Wolfgang Roth & Partners Fine Art, Miami, Florida. 'Ma Liuming (born 1969 in Huangshi, Hubei province) is a contemporary Chinese painter active in performance art. He is known most of all for his exploration of the power and poetry of public nudity in China, where such behavior was strictly forbidden. That is why he has been the target of government censorship, unable to perform in his own country for most of his career. In 1981 Ma Liuming started to study oil painting with tutor Cai Erhe. He graduated from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in 1991 (MFA) in the Oil Painting Department. Two years later, he was one of the founders of Beijing East Village, an artists colony on the outskirts of Beijing. In the early 1990s it became a Mecca for experimental art forms. One of Ma Liuming’s first performances was called "Fen-Ma Liuming’s Lunch 1", a collaboration with Zhang Huan and Zhu Ming in 1994. He sat, completely nude, sucking a plastic tube that was attached to his penis. In 1994 Ma Liuming was arrested for a period of two months because of works like this. Many of the artists of the Beijing East Village fled in response to this police action. In order to match his own uniquely androgynous appearance Ma Liuming developed his own performance persona – Fen-Ma Liuming, a hybrid figure of male and female components. Next to performances painting is a key component in his works. Since 2000, he has developed his "Baby series", in which the face of Fen-Ma Liuming appears on infant’s bodies. It is a surrealistic image that is both disturbing and laughable. Throughout different mediums such as performance, painting and photography Ma Liuming continues to investigate the limits of provocation, seducing his audience into an inquiry of more intriguing matters.' {source: wikipedia} 40"h, 32"w |

161: DAN BASEN MIXED MEDIA, ORIGINAL WORKDan Basen American; paper, foils, other Mixed media by Dan Basen (1939-1970). Provenance: Dan Basen | Private Collection, Natick, Massachusetts. Regarding his friendship with the artist, consignor states: “In the early 1960s, I had just gotten out of the U.S. But no one knows a person's secret demons - especially a true artist's fears.” 8.5"h, 11"w; 14.5"h, 15.5"w |

'Robert Motherwell is unquestionably one of the most significant American artists of the twentieth century. Like the other Abstract Expressionists, Motherwell rejected conventional realism. Instead he was interested in exploring a reality that went beyond the recognizable image. Motherwell had a particular fascination and preference for working with paper. He also felt that his involvement with printmaking was just as important and vital to his work as his collages or paintings on canvas. Motherwell's first major retrospective was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965. Since then, he has been honored with retrospectives by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, among many others.' {source: askart} 41.25"h, 28.5"w |

Gallery labels to reverse; Martha Jackson Gallery, New York. Since 2000, Domoto has been experimenting with monochrome works in which the pigments are splattered on the canvas.' {source: bridgestonemuseum} 21"h, 15"w; 22"h, 16"w frame |

Gallery label to reverse; Robert Miller Gallery, Inc., New York. '...John Szarkowski, the longtime director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, who gave Ms. Groover a mid-career retrospective in 1987, wrote that “her pictures were good to think about because they were first good to look at.” In this, he said, he considered her a late-20th-century heir to Edward Weston. Her carefully orchestrated large-format photographs — which came to include a wide variety of objects and, later, people — anticipated in some ways the now-prominent practice of more elaborately staged photography by artists like Jeff Wall and Thomas Demand and by Gregory Crewdson, who studied under Ms. Groover at the State University of New York, Purchase, where she taught for more than a decade. The critic Andy Grundberg, writing about the 1987 retrospective for The New York Times, credited Ms. Groover with helping to elevate photography from its second-class status in the fine-art world. When one of her kitchen still life's appeared on the cover of Artforum magazine in the late 1970s, he wrote, “it was a signal that photography had arrived in the art world — complete with a marketplace to support it.”...' {source: askart} 8"h, 10"w; 17"h, 19"w frame |
