After his successful career as a leading man in film ended in scandal in the mid-1930s, Billy Haines expanded the nascent interior design studio he had begun with partner Jimmie Shields and quickly became the favorite of Hollywood society. Blending Classical form with modernist purity, Haines' talent attracted clients such as Joan Crawford, George Cukor, Carole Lombard, and Gloria Swanson in the early days, continuing into the 1970s with Betsy Bloomingdale, Walter and Leonore Annenberg, and Ronald and Nancy Reagan, among others.
