unknown

Probably American; bronze, plywood base

Bronze sculpture acquired from the estate of the late sculptor William “Bill” Tarr (New York City/Sarasota, 1925-1981). Although the stacked plywood base is typical of those Mr. Tarr used on his own smaller sculptures (usually maquettes for the massive public pieces for which he is known), we are certain this is not his work. The artist cypher on the piece is not his, and the abstract expressionist style is totally different from Mr. Tarr’s heavy, brutalist work. Given the fact that he socialized with an older group of artists in New York and later East Hampton – notably Ibram Lassaw and Willem De Kooning, we believe this work was likely given to, or acquired by, Mr. Tarr from one of that group. Provenance: Estate of William Tarr | Private Collection, Sarasota, Florida.

736: WILLIAM M. KENT “RECLINING FIGURE” SCULPTURE, ORIGINAL WORK

William M. “Bill” Kent (1919-2012)

American; cast stone, hand-painted to simulate bronze, marble base

Provenance: Artist | Nelson James Dunford | Private collection, Sarasota, Florida. According to the William Kent Foundation, this work was the first of a series of 12 sculptures executed in cast stone as homages to Henry Moore, numbered #32 and simply named “Reclining Figure” by the artist. It has been renumbered “#E32” in the catalogue raisonné to distinguish it from the wood sculpture series Kent began in 1977, starting his numbering again from #1. After graduate studies in music theory at Yale under composer Paul Hindemith, William Kent’s interests turned to sculpture and print-making. Although primarily self-taught, his reputation rose rapidly in the New York art world of the 1950s and early 1960s with rave reviews from the New York Times (calling him a “definite discovery”), inclusion in the Whitney Museum’s 1965 Biennial Exhibition - along with Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell and Robert Rauschenberg, and representation by the renowned New York gallery of Richard Castellane. The increasingly blatant usage of sexual and political imagery in his work became too toxic for the pre-Sexual-Revolution art world of the time, and, unwilling to compromise his vision, he withdrew to his Connecticut studio to continue his work until his recent death at age 93. A 2013 retrospective exhibition of Kent’s sculptures and prints entitled “My Life Ruined by Sex” at the New York Museum of Sex illustrated how shocking his work must have seemed in the 1960s.

The club owner told him it had been created in Cuba in the 1930s, but he could not recall the artist’s name. The story rang true to me because the style and materials were quite similar to several signed Cuban Art Deco pieces I had had in the past.”
