Regarding his friendship with the artist, consignor states: 'In the early 1960s, I had just gotten out of the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant and Public Relations Officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain, where I worked on PR for the Cdr. Alan Shephard NASA Mercury space capsule launch, America's first sub-orbital mission into space. I went immediately from that Navy tour of duty to become the Public Relations Director of the Wadsworth Atheneum Art Museum in Hartford. CT - America's oldest art museum (1844). It was there I met Dan Basen. He was living in West Hartford, CT at the time. He was part of the area's young active art community that gathered regularly in the museum for various events. Dan was also a good friend of the Wadsworth's famous curator of paintings Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr., who went on to become the patron and partner of the famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Sam was a great supporter of Dan and his vibrant work. We all were close friends in and outside of the museum. Being in PR, I was often asked by Dan to write the press releases for him for the art shows at which he was exhibiting in the area. Being a struggling artist, he presented me with his artwork in lieu of fees. Dan often visited me and my wife in our home, and we visited his. We became very good close friends. He and his creativity were fun and very exciting to be around. Then he moved on in the late ‘60s to New York City. That horrible April 1st in 1970, the day he ended his life, shocked and deeply saddened us greatly. I can still see him wagging his wild curly head and laughing excitedly over his latest creative effort. All that energy was in his work. He had no bounds. He seemed to have such a bright future. But no one knows a person's secret demons - especially a true artist's fears.'

Abstract painting by Sandro Martini (b. 1941). 'Sandro Martini was born on April 21, 1941 in Livorno (Tuscany- Italy). Since 1957 he has received acknowledgements for his work with awards and publications of reviews on newspapers. At 17 he was commissioned to complete reliefs to the new Synagogue in Livorno by the Architect Andrea di Castro. In these years he made sculptures on wood and iron. In 1960 he moved to Milan. In 1962 Le Ore was the first gallery to exhibit his works. An exclusive collaboration with the gallery began. Other collaborations with important galleries followed: in 1967 Il Milione, in 1975 La Galleria Blu. From 1977 Sandro Martini began his experience abroad with an exhibition in Paris (Gallerie NRA – presented by Marcelin Playnet). The following year he had a personal exhibition at the Fine Art University of Massachusetts. Since then he has been travelling from his studios in New York, San Francisco and Milan. Painting '... De Continuite' by Hisao Domoto (b. 1928). Gallery label to reverse; Martha Jackson Gallery, New York. 'Domoto grew up in a family of artists, including his uncle Domoto Insho. At the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts he studied Nihonga, Japanese-style painting. While he was still in school, one of his works was selected for the Nitten exhibition, an achievement that raised high hopes for his future. In 1952 he traveled with his uncle on his first trip to Europe and, fed up with the closed world of art in Japan, turned his eyes overseas. In 1955 he moved to France and began to paint in the Western-style, then threw himself body and soul into the Informel movement. His first solo exhibition at the Stadler Gallery in Paris was a brilliant success. In these works his brushstrokes slashed left and right, covering the canvas with horizontal strokes. During the early 1960s, however, he left Informel and produced the Solutions of Continuities series, using heavy impasto to create images of wheel tracks or louvered doors. In the 1970s, he employed repeated circles in works whose names are taken from astronomical bodies. Starting in the 1980s, his range expanded to include zig-zag lines in a wide range of acrylic colors, giving birth to the Continuous Response series. He is known most of all for his exploration of the power and poetry of public nudity in China, where such behavior was strictly forbidden. That is why he has been the target of government censorship, unable to perform in his own country for most of his career. In 1981 Ma Liuming started to study oil painting with tutor Cai Erhe. He graduated from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in 1991 (MFA) in the Oil Painting Department. Two years later, he was one of the founders of Beijing East Village, an artists colony on the outskirts of Beijing. In the early 1990s it became a Mecca for experimental art forms. One of Ma Liuming’s first performances was called "Fen-Ma Liuming’s Lunch 1", a collaboration with Zhang Huan and Zhu Ming in 1994. He sat, completely nude, sucking a plastic tube that was attached to his penis. In 1994 Ma Liuming was arrested for a period of two months because of works like this. Many of the artists of the Beijing East Village fled in response to this police action. In order to match his own uniquely androgynous appearance Ma Liuming developed his own performance persona – Fen-Ma Liuming, a hybrid figure of male and female components. Next to performances painting is a key component in his works. Since 2000, he has developed his "Baby series", in which the face of Fen-Ma Liuming appears on infant’s bodies. It is a surrealistic image that is both disturbing and laughable. Regarding his friendship with the artist, consignor states: “In the early 1960s, I had just gotten out of the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant and Public Relations Officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain, where I worked on PR for the Cdr. Alan Shephard NASA Mercury space capsule launch, America's first sub-orbital mission into space. I went immediately from that Navy tour of duty to become the Public Relations Director of the Wadsworth Atheneum Art Museum in Hartford. CT - America's oldest art museum (1844). It was there I met Dan Basen. He was living in West Hartford, CT at the time. He was part of the area's young active art community that gathered regularly in the museum for various events. Dan was also a good friend of the Wadsworth's famous curator of paintings Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr., who went on to become the patron and partner of the famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Sam was a great supporter of Dan and his vibrant work. We all were close friends in and outside of the museum. Being in PR, I was often asked by Dan to write the press releases for him for the art shows at which he was exhibiting in the area. Being a struggling artist, he presented me with his artwork in lieu of fees. Dan often visited me and my wife in our home, and we visited his. We became very good close friends. He and his creativity were fun and very exciting to be around. Then he moved on in the late ‘60s to New York City. That horrible April 1st in 1970, the day he ended his life, shocked and deeply saddened us greatly. I can still see him wagging his wild curly head and laughing excitedly over his latest creative effort. All that energy was in his work. He had no bounds. He seemed to have such a bright future. But no one knows a person's secret demons - especially a true artist's fears.”

His work also was included in Painting and Sculpture of the Decade (1964), Tate Gallery, London, and he participated in the São Paulo Biennial (the prize for Foreign Artist, 1965) and the French Pavilion, Exposition universelle, Montreal (1967). Following a major car accident in 1967, from which he recovered in Paris, he received and completed the commissions for a mural for the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (1968–69), and a public mural in the sport center in Hannover, West Germany, for the 1972 Olympics. The work shows the obvious influence of Filipowski’s mentor and lifelong friend, Lázló Moholy-Nagy, under whom he studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Filipowski taught at I.I.T. in the late 1940s, then Harvard’s Graduate School of Design in the early 1950s before moving to M.I.T. where he introduced the Bauhaus principles he had learned from Moholy-Nagy. Since early in his career, his work was exhibited in major galleries (e.g., Julian Levy in NYC where, at just 21 years old in 1944, he was invited to show with Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray) and collected by museums and notable private collectors such as David Rockefeller and Walter Gropius. Our consignor purchased this piece 25 years ago from The Two Collection, an annual juried selection of the 100 finest donations from the many thousands of gifts received to support the WGBH Education Foundation in Boston (also included that year were major works from Robert Motherwell, Dale Chihuly, Robert Rauschenberg and others of similar stature).

Gallery labels to reverse; Martha Jackson Gallery, New York. 'Domoto grew up in a family of artists, including his uncle Domoto Insho. At the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts he studied Nihonga, Japanese-style painting. While he was still in school, one of his works was selected for the Nitten exhibition, an achievement that raised high hopes for his future. In 1952 he traveled with his uncle on his first trip to Europe and, fed up with the closed world of art in Japan, turned his eyes overseas. In 1955 he moved to France and began to paint in the Western-style, then threw himself body and soul into the Informel movement. His first solo exhibition at the Stadler Gallery in Paris was a brilliant success. In these works his brushstrokes slashed left and right, covering the canvas with horizontal strokes. During the early 1960s, however, he left Informel and produced the Solutions of Continuities series, using heavy impasto to create images of wheel tracks or louvered doors. From 1910 to 1915, he designed posters for the vaudeville acts appearing at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. Frank Lloyd Wright's son John saw his work, and the two became friends. John introduced Iannelli's work to his father, Frank Lloyd Wright, who invited Iannelli to work with him on his Midway Gardens project in 1914. Iannelli created several of the Midway's Sprite sculptures for Wright.
